Breastfeeding in public
You may be worried or anxious about breastfeeding your baby in public with other people around. But once you have mastered the art of getting your baby on the breast, you will be able to breastfeed discreetly and feel more comfortable.
It is possible to breastfeed so discreetly that most people will not even realise what you are doing – even if they are sitting right across from you.
Tips for discreet breastfeeding in public:
- Timing is important to avoid unwanted attention. Be ready to nurse before your baby gets hungry and impatient.
- If you wear a vest or camisole under your top, you can lift the outer top to access your breast while your tummy and back remain covered. If you do not have clothing specifically designed for breastfeeding, you can cut slits in the front of an old T-shirt and wear it under a larger top.
- Drape a blanket over your shoulder to cover your breast. Using a baby sling or a nursing cover works too.
- Practise in front of a mirror or have your partner watch you breastfeed to make sure there is no extra skin showing.
With time and a little practice, you and your baby will become comfortable with breastfeeding in public.
