Popular Myths for Guessing the Gender of your Baby

Last week we focused on the different types of scans available during pregnancy. Your three month scan will be both an apprehensive and exciting time when you and your partner visit the hospital to check that everything is ok with your little miracle and also, amazingly see your little one for the very first time.

For all those parents who choose to wait to find out the sex of their baby, we thought we’d put together a post on the popular myths for guessing the gender of your baby. Whether you want to try them out or not, we’re sure you are bound to come across at least one during pregnancy and although you don’t want to know, it’s always fun to guess right?

Carrying High or low?

If you’re carrying your baby low it’s a boy; high, it’s a girl. We’re sure you’ll receive at least one comment about this one!

Shape of bump:

Have you got a bump that sticks straight out? Or is your bump more rounded? If your bump sticks straight out you’re having a boy but if you have a more rounded bump, you may be having a girl!

Wedding Ring:

If you put the pregnant mother’s wedding ring on a string it’ll tell you the sex of your baby. If it swings back and forth like a pendulum it’s a boy, if it swings in a circular motion it’s a girl.

Mum’s Beauty:

If you are having a girl supposedly your beauty disappears during pregnancy as it is often said that the girl steals the mother’s beauty. If you think that you have really bloomed in pregnancy and never looked more beautiful, you might be having a little boy.

Hmmm we’re not so sure about this one, seems a little harsh to us!

Morning Sickness:

If you haven’t suffered from morning sickness, you’re having a boy. If you have experienced morning sickness during your pregnancy, you’re having a girl!


What you crave during pregnancy could be the tell-tale sign…If you’re craving salty foods while pregnant, you are more than likely having a boy. If you crave sweets, fruit, and orange juice, you might just be having a little girl. What foods have you been craving?

Dad’s weight gain:

If dad piles on the pounds during your preganancy it is said you will be having a girl. Is this because dad indulges in your cravings too?

The Way You Walk:

Next time you go out for a stroll take note on how you walk. If you step forward with your right foot first you’re having a boy; left and you’re having a girl.


If a toddler boy expresses interest in a pregnant woman, she’s more than likely having a girl. If he doesn’t show interest, she’s having a boy.

The Way you Sleep:

Which way do you lie down in bed? If you prefer sleeping on your left side, you'll have a boy. On your right side? Then you’re having a little girl. Has this changed during pregnancy?

Graceful or Clumsy Pregnancy?

If you feel as though you have become clumsy during pregnancy it is likely you’ll be having a boy!

Even or Odd?

If your age and year of conception are both even or odd, it's a baby girl. One even, one odd means it’s a boy!
