Hello 2020! How to Prioritise Self-Care for Mums in the New Year
A new year can mean feeling like you have to make big changes and resolutions, but here at Medela, we believe that just because it’s January, doesn’t mean you have to put extra pressure on yourself! Spending time on self-care for mums is so important, and yet is often overlooked. Why not focus your new year’s resolutions on how you can spend your precious time looking after yourself in 2020?
Self-care for new mums can often be pushed to the bottom of the pile during the festive season, so come New Year, it’s time for some well-deserved rest and recuperation! Here at Medela, we have put together a guide some alternative New Year’s resolutions to help take the pressure off this January!
Don’t worry about other people are doing
Just because Donna from up the road has joined the gym, thrown away every carb in her cupboards and is enthusiastically singing the praises of a new fad diet, doesn’t mean you have to join her! You’ve just had a baby, spend your time celebrating the amazing journey your body has just been through!
Your body needs time to recover and readjust to the changes it is going through, give yourself time and most importantly, find your feet with your new steps into motherhood.
Take it easy
If you’re in the first few weeks after birth, take things very easy, especially if you’ve had a C-section. You have just had major surgery, so rest up and enjoy having people support and help you! Your body need time to recover, so accept the extra help when it’s offered.
If your friends or family offer to pop across a hot meal for you, help with the washing or keep an eye on any older siblings (or pets!), don’t feel awkward about saying yes – they will be thrilled to help you out.
Cherish your time
Rather than planning to get more done this year, instead try to slow down! You will never get this time with your baby back, so treasure it. Say no to things, slim down your to-do list and instead cherish the moments with your little one whilst they are still tiny!
Learn a new skill
This one is already ticked off your list! Becoming a mum and learning all about how to be a parent is one of the most wonderful skills you can ever master! If you’re choosing to breastfeed, this is a new superpower skill in itself – find more tips and tricks for getting started on your breastfeeding journey here.
Get more sleep
This is unfortunately one resolution we can pretty much guarantee you’re not going to keep if you have a newborn – although we do have great tips from fellow mums here.
