Why You Should Write A Love Letter to Your Little One This Valentine’s Day

Candlelit dinners might be off the cards, but this Valentine’s Day you can still celebrate – by writing a love letter to your little one! A cute idea for a memory box, or to save to be opened on their 18th birthday, why not sit down with your partner and put your feelings onto paper – a snapshot of having a baby during a pandemic, and the ray of hope they can bring into your life?

With Valentine’s Day set to look a little less romcom and a little more horror film this year thanks to COVID, we thought it would be a great opportunity to have a reflective moment and write a love letter to your little one as a memento for the future. Document this moment in time for them being born during the pandemic and demonstrate how they positively impacted such a challenging time!

The perfect memento for baby as they get older, why not settle down with your partner and put pen to paper, capturing your thoughts on the current times, and saving it for little one to read in the future. Let’s be honest, Valentine’s day with a newborn may not look as romantic as previous years anyway, with the hustle and bustle of a newborn in your household, putting aside ten minutes or so to do this activity might just be the special Valentine’s moment you both deserve!

Whether you’ve become a parent during lockdown, or your little one has been growing up for the past year without the usual help and support from friends and family, there’s never been a better time to document what’s going on in baby’s life, celebrating your little Valentine and all the hope they have brought to you.

Maybe you want to document big milestones such as baby’s first words, or just a single day in their life, writing a letter is a great way to reflect on how you’re feeling, as well as a lovely memento to look back on.

Pick a cosy moment, cuddle on the sofa with a pen and paper, and reflect on little one’s life so far.

Below are some writing prompts to help you get started.

  • What were the news headlines on the day little one was born?
  • Who’s been a great support in little one’s life so far?
  • How did giving birth during lockdown make you feel?
  • What are your hopes and dreams for little one as they grow up?

Or why not finish these sentences?

  • When you were born, the world looked like…
  • However, your arrival made us feel…
  • Our favourite newborn moment with you so far has been…
  • I can’t wait for you to meet…
  • The one word we’d use to describe you is…
